Extended Cookie Manager 0.9

Tag: Extended Cookie Manager, Firefox ExtensionsAdministrator @ 11:00

You waited for a new release with a load of helpful new features? Here it comes. It’s my personal goal to make everything that has to do with everyday use of cookies a lot easier. I was always a bit annoyed of how all kind of new features get into Firefox 3, but when you look at the cookie exception dialog, it has the old, moldering look from 2003. Not only that it looked old, the usability was bad. You wanted to find a website to delete it? You had to go through the whole list manually, searching for all appearances of one site, sometimes starting with “www.” or other subdomains.

This is why i now added a search function into the dialog. You also can now double-click on any of the rows to get the host into the textbox on the top. This is useful if you want to add a subdomain of an existing entry in the list or just remove the “www.” before the hostname.

Since there’s a brand new firefox version coming June 17th with new shiny icons, i also added some more modern styled cookie icons to my extension.

Cookie exceptions dialog now searchable

Hi Sven! I was just waiting for the FF3 update of this wonderful extension (after using ECM I couldn’t switch to CookieSafe and Cookie Monster, I don’t like them). Can’t wait to download it (addons.mozilla.org is still listing the 0.8.1 version)! Thank you very much for you great work!

    Wow! Looking good…

Does the Extended Cookie Manager have some issues with older session data?

On my Mac I upgraded the Extended Cookie Manager to 0.9 together with my update of FF to 3.0 (previously I used FF3RC3) and the Extended Cookie Manager doesn’t work correctly any more. I also use the session manager 0.6.1.13.

I set both ECM options “Always show cookie icon in statusbar” and “Show domain alternatives”. In my FF preferences I have “Accept cookies from sites” disabled.

So most sites should show the “Cookies blocked”-icon and have a full “Allow cookies/block cookies”-menu when clicked on the icon. But most sites just show the “No cookies”-icon and the menu only contains “View cookie exceptions…”.

If I discard all my private data and saved sessions the ECM seems to work but discarding all my sessions isn’t really an option and I would rather have to discard ECM.

    Bummer :-(

Can I do something less than discard all my sessions to make ECM work again?

    Hi Sven!

First I wanted to thank you for your wonderful extension, and to thank you for upgrading it for FF3 8-).

I have a request: would it be possible to have an option to “temporary” allow cookie for a site (meaning until Firefox close)? It would be useful for all those sites where I have to allow cookie for browse them and then block cookie when I’m finished. Thanks!

This extension kills Firefox 3 on me. Consistent error in chrome://xcm/content/xcmOverlay.js - looks like an endless loop or blocking download from a non-existing server. A lot of people are having similar problems.

  6. mike says:

This addon only works on sites that gets a padlock in the statusbar,
on all other sites, Extended Cookie Manager 0.9 just a gray icon and you can’t choose the permissions on the cookies.

Thats why I at the moment choose to use CS Lite instead.

    Hi,

Thanks for this addon. It’s excellent for keeping the number of stored cookies down.

I am currently having an issue with local web pages. I use Prince TiddlyWiki (ptw.sf.net) from a local USB disk. This keeps its settings (Your name, autosave, make backups, etc) in a cookie. However, Extended Cookie Manager doesn’t seem to allow its cookies. Even after selecting “Allow cookies on” (full text, no domain is shows in the menu option) it continues to block cookies.

Do you know of a fix / workaround for this please?

    Thanks in advance

  8. Christian says:

i have the problem, that the addon always display google.com on sites where isnt a cookie set.
if you mail me, so i send screenshots.

First of all, thanks for a great add-on! I use it regularly. But there are some features I miss that would make things a lot easier.

    * A button in the menu for deleting cookies for the current site.
    * A button for deleting session cookies.
    * A button that opens the standard “View cookies” dialog.
    * Making it possible to set cookie exceptions even on sites that doesn’t use cookies.

    Regards ReFreezed

Locked up Firefox 3.0.1, had to remove it. Too bad, I really miss the “Privacy Report” functionality of IE. It’s way too hard to unblock a cookie through the menus in Firefox.

  11. Tiki says:

I can not download with https://addons.mozilla.org/ru/firefox/addon/1243, Where can I download yet (mirror)?

  12. Ji2GLiPu2F says:

Very simple, convenient, pleasant and clear! What I was looking for!
Very nice plugin. Can you do export and import cookies? Because, after reinstalling the operating system, re-enter sites inconvenient.

  13. Milly says:

Used the ECM happily for a long time. Now on Linux/Ubuntu with FF 3.0.3 and I can’t use or install the extension anymore. FF says it is NOT compatible with 3.0.3!
    What to do?

  14. Dock says:

For me, a most important feature is missing. The ability to block third party cookies, such as tracking cookies) directly from the status bar menu. So if I go to http://www.xxx.com, and the site loads a cookie from http://www.spyonme.com, I can simply select “Block cookies from http://www.spyonme.com” directly in the menu without having to go through the exceptions dialog, which is a pain.

And, if the site loads third party cookies from more than one site, they should all be configurable, just like the first one I described above.

Any chance you can implement this?

  15. Administrator says:

The thing is, I created this extension with the idea that I always block cookies. Then if a site doesn’t work, I look in the right corner and see if the site wanted to set a cookie (blocked symbol). Most of this happens, when you’re on a site that has a feature like a shopping basket. If there was a cookie blocked, i permit the cookie just for this site.

So basically i never block cookies with my extension, instead i permit cookies only on choosen sites, because blocking is always set on.

Sometimes this scenario doesn’t work right, because some sites have multiple sub domains and this leads sometimes to a case where you on site http://www.xxx.com, but the cookie is set by whatever.xxx.com of the same domain. Here’s where my extension fails. Otherwise it’s hard to make a normal user understand, that cookies are set from various sites other than the site you currently are on. So this extension tries to be very basic in its functionality and if you use it like me, with always blocking cookies, then it works quite well.

Although I know it has much problems when using it other way around. Because when i always accept cookies and then block to many sites the list becomes longer and longer. Which also lead to some performance problems, that are mentioned all over the addons site (that’s not the only cause of the performance bug, it also has to do with a Firefox design flaw). I like to be honest to you: Since the extension does for me what i had in mind when i wrote it, i’m pretty happy with it and a bit lazy to add other features. It’s not that you had a point and your suggestion is good (i also though about a better way to handle third party cookies), but i really don’t need this. Maybe when I have much more time, i will rewrite the extension.

What is the difference between the cookies in the trash can thing on top and the other non trash can cookies on bottom?

  17. steve says:

I couldn’t find a way to report problems. Cookie manager pops up an empty alert on the site below. It does it every time.

  18. Hannes says:

Had many problems with a script error and slow web page loading. Maybe it is some problematic interacting with an other addon.

The Extended Cookie Manager worked for some time, but without changing anything it suddenly produced permanently this error (Sorry, but my browser speaks german.):

Ein Skript auf dieser Seite ist eventuell beschäftigt oder es antwortet nicht mehr. Sie können das Skript jetzt stoppen oder fortsetzen, um zu sehen, ob das Skript fertig wird.

    Skript: chrome://xcm/content/xcmOverlay.js:196

I had to deactivate it to use my browser again.

  20. Jonne says:

What all the cookie managers are missing is the ability to delete cookies with one button, EXCEPT the ones you’ve added to your protected list. There is no way to check the cookies you want to save from deletion. Even if you want to keep a handful of cookies, like your forum settings, google settings, youtube recommended etc., it becomes painful to delete all except those. Can you please add this?

Please add support for Firefox 3.5!

    thanks!

  22. Eddie says:

This has been killing Firefox 3 and 3.5 for me. I disabled this extension, and Firefox no longer hangs with 100% CPU when loading pages. Before disabling this extension, Firefox would often hang for tens of seconds when loading a web page.

A nice extension, but taking 100% CPU for so long means I cannot use it.

  23. steve says:

Can’t load npr.org. CPU use goes way up when I try. Disable cookie and npr.org works fine. Problem happens consistently.

  24. Terrine says:

Just where does Extended Cookie Manager store its settings?

  25. Administrator says:

Type “about:config” into the URL bar and press enter. Search for “xcm”. You’ll find two properties xcm.showDomainAlternative amd xcm.showIconAlways. All cookie settings are stored in firefox’ own cookie database.

  26. User says:

    Hello,

Can you update your addon for Firefox 3.6b and 3.7a ?

    Thanks in advance

Oh yes, I second the appeal for an update for the new release candidates/betas.

  29. april says:

Has been working for me ever since using FF3.2. Is there a time line for an update to FF3.6? I’ve been postponing an update for now…

  30. Administrator says:

I currently have no time to update the extension, but I bumped the version to 3.6.*. If there’s any problems with this version, please report here. What i really had in mind for a newer version was a complete rewrite, since there is still a problem for some people who have strange hang ups. I never had such thing and it was never possible to me to reproduce it, but i found a “smoother” method to detect cookies and started to implement it. Maybe sometime soon i will find some time to get rid of the old code, that I actually wrote 5 (sic) years ago for Firefox 1.0! Oh how time flies…

Would file bug reports, etc; however, if this is truly unmaintained, I’ll look elsewhere.
